About the Item

This handsome pair of 19th-century cabinets is a masterclass in the Boulle style. At the top, elegant black marble cut in a bombé shape to line up with the form of the cabinets. Each cabinet features elaborate inlays of brass and pewter that create a striking contrast against the dark ebonized wood background. Central panels are decorated with mythological figures in classical scenes intricately rendered in brass and pewter and set amongst swirling foliage motifs and elegant arabesques; motifs which are also featured around the top and on the corners and side panels. Uniquely, these cabinets feature a mirrored inlay design where the use of brass and pewter are reversed between the two creating a striking complimentary effect. Bands of gilt bronze in egg-and-dart and foliate motifs frame the intricate Boulle work. Castings of cherubs or puttis with intricate florals and scrollwork adorn the corners and foliate keyhole escutcheons are mounted on the central panels. Acanthus leaf medallions are featured on the scalloped aprons and delicate cabriole feet.
