About the Item

Swedish Rococo 18th century cabinet, origin: Sweden, circa 1760 - 1775, red exterior with glass doors revealing six shelves in a dark grey/blue interior and two cabinets below. Beautiful proportions with hand-carved center cartouche. The purity of the design, lacking any adornments, along with the pared down elements of this rococo cabinet are quintessential elements of Scandinavian antiques. Rococo decorative qualities are apparent, such as the cabinets form with center cartouche yet it is very much Swedish - simple albeit still Rococo in form. One can see the beginnings of a new, national Swedish restraint beginning to appear in these earlier 18th century pieces. Throughout the centuries the Swedish cabinetmakers created unbelievable works of art unparalleled by their interpretation of the furniture and trends of their time. Never overdone, never heavy-handed always well-proportioned -- even through the Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo periods one can see a true, honest restraint that is rarely seen in Europe.
