About the Item
A striking Art Deco bird's eye maple & macassar ebony tall and narrow chest of drawers. English - 1930s.
The chest of drawers is of excellent quality and unusual streamlined size for this period. Compact and elegant in form, prioritising vertical storage. In excellent clean condition with a lovely colour. It has been re-finished by hand, but still retains light authentic marks to highlight its genuine heritage.
The drawer side and backs are made of solid wood with dovetail construction, the drawer fronts are also made of wood, with maple veneer over. All work very well and are clean on the insides.
There has been a veneer repair to the top front corner to note. There are some small hairline openings in places to the sides, but these are hardly noticeable. The chest has no damage and it is free from any woodworm.
Veneered in bird's eye maple and macassar ebony, the chest of drawers is original and not converted. A wonderful piece that could be used in many room settings.
Delivery included to mainland England and Wales.

George III English Satinwood & Banded Bow Fronted Chest Commode Circa 1790
Located in Norwich, GB
A superb George III satinwood bow fronted four drawer chest/commode. English. Circa 1790.
The commode chest has four long graduated drawers over a shaped apron, on splayed feet. It retains the original brass handles, which is rare.
Veneered over solid oak in the finest quarter-sawn satinwood, banded in rosewood and mahogany, with boxwood stringing throughout.
It has has been sympathetically re-finished, still retaining some authentic marks to highlight its genuine heritage. To the left hand side near the back there is some slight damage to the banding and a small piece of veneer has been re-glued back on near the escutcheon of the third drawer down. Please refer to the photographs.
The drawers are lined in oak with handmade dovetail construction. The drawer sides have had slivers of oak added to make the drawers run better.
The underside of the top has neat butterfly construction to the oak join, always a sign of a well made piece. There is no woodworm.
Originally a commode occupied a prominent position in a house, not always for bedroom use...
