A petit floral marquetry commode or chiffoniere (what-not table or chest ) in the transitional style of Louis XV going to Louis XVI .The case front with two drawers and a brushing or writing slide tray and one side with a drawer . Excellent cast, chased and crisp chutes and sabots still retaining much of original gilding ..

In generally good condition there are visible age cracks with subsequent veneer loss as apparent in photos. There is also some loss of veneer to the back inside of legs , not readily visible and filled with infill . The enclosed marble top with gilt metal surround . Surface blemishes to the wood throughout most likely from heat , sunlight .
As this is stamped G. Durand most likely crafted in the 1870-1889period as in 1890 the name was changed to Durand et Fils.
Gervais-Maximilien-Eugene Durand (French, 1839 - c. 1920) was best known for producing high quality furniture after important 18th Century makers including Adam Weisweiler and Jean-Henri Riesener. He established his firm Maison Durand in 1870 and won a silver medal in the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1889. After his son Frederic-Louis joined the firm in 1890 at which point the firm changed its name to 'Durand et Fils'. In 1920, upon Gervais Durand's death, Frederic-Louis took over the business and continued until 1934.
