About the Item

Beautiful antique mahogany Campaign chest with secretary from Ross & Co from Dublin. There is a secretary in the upper right drawer. The desk is beautifully finished with burr walnut around the leather and the drawers feature bleached maple veneer. The chest of drawers is completely in its original state and structurally perfect. It has the original appearance with many traces of use and the 1st finish is still present. The result is that the color and appearance are pure. Beautiful patina, something that you cannot apply but is created by decades of use. This type of chest of drawers has been traveling with an English officer. You can see that and we also want to see it in a Campaign chest of drawers. Origin: England Period: Approximate 1840 Size: W 101 cm, D 49 cm, H 117 cm (107 cm without legs) Ross & Co was known for its excellent quality. This is apparent from, among other things, the mahogany used. The sides and top are made out of one piece mahogany In addition, the pattern on the sides continues. Made with craftsmanship and without saving on materials. Top quality. Brass marking of the maker in the right drawer and also all drawers are marked, this is special. Consisting of 2 parts, brass corners, removable legs. All this to be able to transport it quickly and easily during a Campaign of the British army in the 19th century. Ross & Co. from 9, 10 & 11 Ellis Quay, Dublin. Ross and co. from Dublin were one of the most important makers of Campaign furniture in the William IV and Victorian era and their name still stands out today as a leader in their field. With the rapid growth of the British Empire in the 19th century came the increased movement of rulers, settlers and of course the army and navy. It was not unusual for an officer to have so much luggage that would now be considered a ridiculous amount of luggage. The company advertised that they started in 1790 Ross stands out for a number of reasons from the many other makers of the period, but perhaps the most important is their originality in design. Much of Ross's work can be considered typical of the William IV and Victorian periods in the use of the fashionable design features of the day. An important factor for their customers, who were mainly well-sorted gentlemen officers with an eye on the stylish. It weighs less than 20 pounds. The success that Ross and Co. from Dublin in the course of the 19th century, can be based on a number of factors, the most obvious being that they were very good furniture makers. The quality of the work combined with their ingenuity of design, which was quite distinctive from their contemporaries, and attention to the popular styles of the day proved to be a winning combination. However, Ross also had other factors working to their advantage to create a strong customer base. Not only was a large percentage of British Army officers Irish, but Ross was smart enough to position himself close to one of Europe's largest barracks. The barracks were occupied by an army that had spread all-over the world and most of whom were the best officers to afford, who wanted to travel in style and had all the comforts of home when they arrived at their destination. In December 1905, the owners of the company announced their retirement and their residual stock was sold at a number of auctions. England Wood: Solid mahogany. Dismantles into two sections.
