Louis XV Period Marquetry Stamped Commode with Rouge Royale Marble Top
By Sebastien Vié
Located in Pembroke, MA
Very high quality French, Louis XV period commode (sauteuse) stamped by the Ebeniste, "Sebastian Vie" (master, October 5, 1767), and the guild, JME ("Jurande des Menuisiers et Ebenistes", or Guild of Joiners and Cabinetmakers). The commode has been beautifully restored in France with a French polish finish over marquetry of bois de rose (tulipwood) and bois de Violette (kingwood), with light string inlay framing the drawer and side panels. Ornate gilt-bronze mounts in the rococo manner, including lavish key plates. Nicely-variegated burgundy and white (known as "rouge rance") marble top. Art Nouveau Commode by Émile Gallé
Located in New York, NY
A French Art Nouveau marquetry commode by Émile Gallé. With original key. Circa 1890. The syncretic influence of Japanese art is keenly felt in Gallé's commode. The beginning of Galle's fascination with Japanese art can be traced back to his friendship with Hokkai Takashima (1850-1931), a fellow botanist and member of the École de Nancy. Their botanical dialogue was facilitated by the Shokobutsu mei-i, a book of Japanese names for botanical species. It is from Hokkai that Gallé gained a spiritual and symbolic understanding of nature. Along with other École de Nancy artists, Hokkai and Gallé exhibited together in the display window of René Wiener's papeterie. The store served as the office of Wiener's arts journal, the Nancy artiste, which regularly featured on its covers contemporary examples of Gansai (Japanese watercolor), Byōbu (folding screens) from the Rinpa school, Sumi-e (ink painting), and Ukiyo-e (woodblock prints). As a show of gratitude, Hokkai bequeathed a vast art book collection to Wiener. It is from this record that we know with certainty of which Japanese artists Gallé had knowledge. One of the books in Hokkai's collection was Hokusai's Les cent paysages du Fuji (Fugaku hyakkei.) This 1835 expansion of Hokusai's 36 views of Mount Fuji...

Very fine Louis XVI style ormolu-mounted marquetry commode
By Jean-Henri Riesener
Located in London, GB
Very fine Louis XVI style ormolu-mounted marquetry commode French, Early 20th Century Height 95cm, width 162cm, depth 59cm After an important model by Jean-Henri Riesener (French, 1734-1806), a highly renowned ebeniste of great standing, this exceptional commode is of outstanding quality, and fully embodies the quality of craftsmanship and great artistic style of the Louis XVI period and the original piece, which is currently housed in the Chateau de Fontainebleau, France. Riesener was a leading exponent and supplier of pieces in the Neoclassical Louis XVI style, and this design conveys the regal feel and presence of his manner, most notably in terms of the beautiful marquetry decorative panel to the front. It consists of a white marble top, above front facing drawers, with a lower door opening; curved sides that are extensively decorated with intricate geometric designs, and a central panel that depicts, in inlay...
