Antique French Gothic Revival Carved Burled Walnut Corner Cabinet
About the Item
A late 19th century French Gothic Revival carved walnut burlwood tiered shelf-top locking corner cupboard with hidden storage compartment and ornate pyrography decoration.
Hand-crafted in France, circa 1880, almost certainly commissioned for a church, featuring beautifully selected highly figured warm rich burled walnut with striking grain patterns, having an architectural cathedral inspired Neo-Gothic triangular case, one-piece design, having a pointed crest with open display shelves accented by shapely acanthus scrolls with hand burned pyrography; above carved colonnade flanked by fluted pilasters, having a fall-front panel opening to provide lectern book stand or writing surface, revealing shelved interior with removable wood false bottom leading to concealed storage compartment; over large single cabinet door opening to shelved interior, flanked by hand carved acanthus adorned fluted columns, further decorated with traditional Gothic pointed window arches, quatrefoils, and tracery motifs.
