Barium Sculpture99 Sideboard by Luciano Frigerio for Frigerio di Desio

About the Item

Extraordinary and extremely rare sideboard, model "Barium," from the "Scultura99" series by Luciano Frigerio for Frigerio di Desio. Entirely made of sculpted solid African walnut slats, this piece belongs to the collection of sculptural furniture designed and produced by Frigerio in the late 1960s. Few people know that Luciano Frigerio's "Scultura99" series was conceived as a strictly limited edition: each model was produced in a maximum of 99 units, and in many cases only 66 or even just 33. This makes the sideboard, unlike other Frigerio pieces, a truly rare collectible. It comes with a certificate of authenticity issued by Luciano Frigerio's heirs, who have confirmed the historical significance of this model within the designer's production. The piece is in excellent condition, with only minimal signs of age consistent with its 60 years of history, as seen in the photos. Luciano Frigerio, born in Desio in 1928, left an indelible mark on the world of design and furniture-making, inheriting a family tradition rooted in fine cabinetmaking. After earning a diploma in accounting at Collegio Pio XI, he pursued his passion for furniture design and musical composition. The socio-economic landscape of 1960s Brianza offered rich opportunities in the art of furniture production. Frigerio seized the moment, and after engaging with prestigious workshops and influential figures like Gio Ponti and Franco Albini, he transformed the family business into an internationally recognized brand. In 1973, he was awarded the title of Commendatore of the Italian Republic, honoring his dedication to fine woodworking. A defining moment in his career came with the realization of his dream: the concept of furniture as unique artwork. Working with a team of skilled technicians, he created his celebrated "Sculpture Furniture in Solid Wood" and "Sculpture Beds in Bronze Castings," offering a unique alternative to mass production. These exclusive works embody artisanal excellence and material richness, earning their place as functional art in the world of design. Frigerio's collaborations with renowned architects and designers-including Franco Albini, Sergio Asti, and Paolo Portoghesi-cemented his position in the design world. He believed architects could create unique furniture for high-end cabinetry, and this belief shaped the company's philosophy of numbered, signed, and one-of-a-kind pieces. Between the 1970s and 1990s, the company expanded, opening ten showrooms in Italy's major cities. In 1989, Frigerio received the title of Knight of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, acknowledging his contributions to design. His works are exhibited in prominent art galleries in Italy and abroad, and have won awards at events such as the Salone Internazionale del Mobile Italiano and Abitare il Tempo. Permanent exhibitions in Milan-including at the Galleria del Sagrato and the "Art Gallery" on Via Montenapoleone-testify to Frigerio's lasting influence in the Milanese art scene. His legacy lives on through exclusive works that celebrate the intersection of functionality, aesthetics, and master craftsmanship in furniture and art. He remains a benchmark of innovation and excellence in contemporary design. Please note: This item is in a very good vintage condition. Minor signs of age may be present but do not affect its functionality. We kindly ask you to consider these characteristics prior to purchase.
