About the Item
Designed by Ferdinando Meccani in 1988, this cherry wood ‘Madia’ sideboard reflects the careful thought and geometric rigor that define his work. Made for the Salone del Mobile in Milan that same year, this piece carries a copper plaque signed by Meccani, identifying it as an official creation of the Meccani Company. It is also documented in the period catalogue.
Design
The sideboard is constructed from solid cherry wood, with a distinctive pattern of overlapping rectangular volumes that form a sculptural front. Drawers and doors are integrated into the composition, disappearing into the grid of reliefs and recesses. A hinged top lifts to reveal hidden storage, while the flanking side compartments open to reveal shelves with ample space. Everything has been built with the logic of craftsmanship and practical use. The proportions are carefully set, creating a stable and generous base with varied visual rhythm across the front. The finish highlights the natural grain and warmth of the cherry, while the internal compartments show Meccani’s eye for usability and detail.
This work connects to Meccani’s broader exploration of furniture as architecture. Rather than designing pieces as static forms, he approached them as built environments on a smaller scale. In this sideboard, that approach is visible in both structure and flow.
Condition
Condition is excellent with only minimal signs of use. The wood is well preserved and the hinges and closures function smoothly. The original signature plaque is affixed to the interior, confirming authorship and date.
