French Ocularist's Glass Eye Cabinet
Located in New Orleans, LA
This 19th-century cabinet contains an assortment of almost 600 individual hand-blown glass eyes. A collection of this magnitude would have resided in the office of a prominent French ocularist, someone who specialized in crafting and fitting prosthetic eyes. The mahogany cabinet doors, adorned with a pair of carved eyelids and glass eyes, open to reveal eight shelves with approximately 596 glass eyes carefully stored in original red baize lining. Organized by iris color and other distinctive features, with the inclusion of pre-cut eyes on the bottom shelf, this collection is a fascinating scientific rarity.

The size adjustments and variations in iris size, thickness, color and shape all necessitated skilled paintwork and craftsmanship. Additionally, red veins were rendered with the use of fine silk strands for those who had a more bloodshot appearance. The only discernible difference between these glass eyes and reality is the inability of the pupils to dilate. One glass eye in the bottom drawer bears a patron’s name, meaning they likely never attended their final fitting.
The art of modeling realistic glass eyeballs...
