About the Item
Bargueño or wastepaper basket with bridge base. Wood, metal. Spanish school, 17th century.
In need of some restoration.
Bargueño or covered waste-paper basket placed on a support of the type known as “bridge base” due to its shape (and which is usually later than the desk), made of carved wood and decorated with reliefs of architectural and plant elements of Classicist influence, vases, spherical finials and torsa columns (two larger ones on either side of the bridge and another two flanking each of them, these combining fluted columns on the upper part with torsa elements on the lower part). On the outside, the wastepaper basket is decorated with cut-out metal fittings (with simplified geometric and vegetal elements) placed on textiles, with handles, nails in the form of shells, handles, knobs, etc., and a bolt in the centre with architectural elements clearly reminiscent of the Baroque period. Opening the front reveals the display, with three levels and several lanes (which do not correspond between these heights), with drawers with shell-shaped knobs and simple panels, and others with columns and metal knobs of the same shape, and chapels with architectural motifs on the front, combining gilded elements with polychrome motifs. This furniture is one of the most common and appreciated types of the 17th-century Castilian school, and its influence remained strong well into the 20th century. The exterior decorations varied, as did the layout of the drawers and chapels inside. The personality of the Spanish style was so strong in the 17th century that it prevented outside influences, especially from France due to the bad diplomatic situation at the time, and this meant a great influence on the rest of Europe, where French models dominated. The 17th century in Spain was a period of decadence, and this would be felt to a great extent in furniture. There were not as luxurious pieces as in other countries, a fact also determined by the pragmatics against luxury dictated by the monarchs. However, Spanish furniture from the Baroque period was of considerable quality, with an enormous personality and, above all, a great interest from the point of view of typology and the search for functionality over decoration. It is also worth noting that the value of the furniture has increased in comparison with the previous century. Considering the inventories of goods, important changes can be seen, with furniture becoming more expensive even than tapestries in the time of Charles II.

Locker Walnut wood, wrought iron. Spain, 17th century.
Rectangular low furniture made of oak with elements in wrought iron that rises slightly on four legs, has a slightly protruding straight top board and fronts decorated with carvings, and has two doors under two drawers, all with key lock (shields of lock decorated with simple lines only on the doors). When opening the doors, there is access to a space divided in two by a shelf decorated with a series of cut lines on its lower edge). In the upper part, under the board, there are carved brackets with simple scrolls, tongues and architectural elements; on the sides of the front some grooves remember architectural motifs. The exterior of doors and drawers and the sides of the furniture have a decoration based on frames of different sizes and shapes (crosses, squares, rectangular), following a tradition deeply rooted in Spanish furniture and that allows you to compare the ticket office...
