Italian Louis XV Floirate Painted Chest with Faux Marbre Top, 19th Century

About the Item

This beautiful Louis XV style painted chest features bronze knobs and escutcheons on each of four drawers. The Italian antique chest dates back to the 19th century and is painted in a floriate design on front and sides, trimmed with gold edging, and hosts a bouquet of flowers on the scrolled center apron. The faux marbre top is painted to give the illusion of a marble top inlaid in the top of the chest, with gild edging. Finally, the piece rests on cabriole legs at bottom. The piece is part of the collection from The French Antique Shop, a fourth generation antique store in the heart of the French Quarter of New Orleans. A space that was created and curated at first by Marie and Marcelle and Granet. Their first shop was located in the heart of Paris, and opened in 1919 after they migrated to Paris from Romania post World War I. Shortly after establishing themselves in Paris, as a Jewish family they were forced to flee in the late 1930s before World War II. Marie and Marcel opened up their shop in New Orleans in 1939, the city in which this antique collection has grown and continues to flourish. The store is now run by the third and fourth generation, Marc, Michael, and Brian Friedlander, and is a highly curated space filled with rare antiquities, fine antique lighting, eclectic fixtures, and everything in between. We have imported all the antique items in our collection directly from France.
