About the Item

Beautiful antique Davenport bureau in burl walnut. Light brown leather inlay with gold profiling. Under the writing surface there is 1 small drawer and 2 false drawer fronts. On the right side there are 4 drawers with knobs. And a very small drawer for writing utensils. This is locked on the inside. The other side are not real drawers. Despite the small dimensions there is still a lot of storage space in the furniture. The Davenport bureau was first made in the George III period ca. 1790, by the famous cabinetmaker Gillows of Lancaster. It was first built and put into use by Captain Davenport and this is the first example of this type of bureau, now called by the name of the captain. During most of the late Georgian and Victorian periods the Davenport was mainly used by the ladies. Origin: England Period: ca. 1860, Victorian Size: w. 56cm, D.54cm, H.83cm
