About the Item

An exceptional Federal period tambour secretary, crafted around 1800, showcasing a sophisticated combination of figured mahogany and vibrant birdseye maple. This piece beautifully exemplifies early American craftsmanship, with refined proportions and striking contrast in wood tones. The upper section features a classic tambour roll that opens to reveal an interior with small drawers and cubbies, flanked by paneled cupboard doors. The writing surface pulls out and folds open to reveal a hidden well beneath—accessed by lifting the hinged writing surface—while the top “drawer” is actually a false front concealing this compartment. Three lower drawers, adorned with oval brass pulls (not original to the piece), provide generous storage and are framed by elegant mahogany veneer. The piece is supported by finely turned legs on brass casters, offering both grace and mobility. In nice antique condition with light wear from age and normal use. A beautiful and functional statement piece with the charm and utility of early American design. 45h x 40w x 22d knee height 28
