About the Item
A 19th century secrétaire à abattant from France, circa 1880, this drop-front secretary desk is made of faux bamboo carved from pine simulating that golden glow of the exotic material. The top surface is a piece of inset, white marble shaped in turreted front corners. Note that the stone has a few cracks and has been professionally repaired at the back left corner. The top drawer retains the original lock but uses the key as a pull, decorated on the front with a geometric design of thin, faux bamboo trim. What appears to be a stack of three drawers is the flap of the desk, unfolding to reveal a work area of burgundy leather detailed with gold tooling. The leather is in great antique condition making this a comfortable place to write. When open, one sees the theatre is equipped with four small drawers, two upper shelves, and a small pigeonhole compartment. With the desk down the maximum depth is 33”; the writing surface is 28” from the floor. Three actual storage drawers are found in the lower half of the piece, the middle one is able to lock by using the same key as the desk door.
