French Directoire Period, Two-Part Bureau Cylindre
About the Item
The desk opens with a roll top and reveals a sliding leather-topped writing surface, two large compartments, and small drawers. The sides are beautifully carved with palm leaves and flowing floral garlands.
The lower part, or the commode, opens with four drawers on three levels. Each corner has an excellent carving of an Egyptian head atop blackened wood columns with gilded bronze capitals. The piece rests on four turned feet of blackened wood. There are brass moldings and handles as well as excellent quality brass escutcheons.
