About the Item
Antique top secretary
Italy
various precious woods
second half 18th century
Dimensions: H x W x D: 219 x 89 x 50 cm
Description:
Slender and well-proportioned secretary with architectural marquetry.
Two-piece piece of furniture standing on slightly curved stud feet.
The three lower drawers are veneered diagonally and mirrored starting from the keyhole. A corresponding arrangement of the grain patterns can also be found on the sides and the secretary flap.
The writing part, which is built on the chest-like base, is elegantly curved on the outside. The slanted writing flap leads to the strongly recessed top.
If we open the flap, we see a simple interior veneered in light fruitwood with four drawers.
The highlight of the piece of furniture is the single-door structure. Also veneered diagonally is the outer part of the door, which forms the frame for the almost three-dimensional inlay work.
Depicted is a ribbed vault supported by columns. The use of different types of wood and grain gradients in combination with the chosen vanishing point perspective convey a spatial character. The highly iridescent birch wood in the vault and the light maple wood chosen for the background make the effect of light and shadow tangible.
The cornice, which is pulled sharply upward in the center, is partially mirrored at the front. The cranked finial consists of end-grain wood pieces strung together, typical of the period.

Biedermeier / Empire around 1815
Dimensions: H x W x D: 174 x 102 x 55 cm
Description:
Very exclusive secretary from the Prussian North German Biedermeier period around 1815.
Piece of furniture standing on pointed legs with two drawers at the bottom, the writing flap above, another drawer above and a hidden head drawer at the very top.
The piece of furniture is veneered in exciting grained birch wood. Due to the different color hangings within the wood and the interplay of hues associated with it, we also refer to it as "flamed" birch.
The beautiful wood is complemented by blackened moldings and beautiful fire-gilded bronze hardware in beautiful quality.
The interior of the writing compartment is veneered in apple tree.
We see a stair-like rise to a central door flanked by pilasters. Drawers of different sizes and two large compartments with dividers for letters and papers complete the secretary part.
Looking at the piece of furniture from above, we see an old shipping label. According to it, the secretary was loaded onto the train at the station "Odertor" in Wroclaw. The destination was probably Berin. Corresponding mmarkings we find on the back panel.
Piece of furniture made in wonderful quality craftsmanship. A true testament to the high quality of Prussian furniture...
