About the Item

This exquisite French Louis XVI secretary desk exemplifies the refined elegance and craftsmanship of late 18th to early 19th century French furniture. Constructed from rich mahogany and finely detailed with intricate marquetry, the piece is mounted with exceptional gilt-bronze ornamentation. The upper cabinet features two paneled doors adorned with a diamond-patterned parquetry inlay, accented with stylized fleur-de-lys motifs and bordered in gilt-bronze beading. At each side, finely cast and chiseled gilt-bronze female caryatid figures stand as supports, lending classical grandeur to the overall design. A floral ormolu mount crowns the cabinet frieze, enhancing its stately presence. Below, the writing surface is supported by a single long drawer, richly veneered with geometric marquetry and centered with a finely cast gilt-bronze rosette medallion. Four tapering, fluted legs, each banded with gilt-bronze collars and capped feet, elevate the piece with harmonious proportion and balance. Both decorative and functional, this secretary offers concealed storage with lockable compartments, while serving as a refined writing desk. The use of warm mahogany, precise inlay work, and the luminous gilt-bronze mounts are hallmarks of the Louis XVI period, emphasizing symmetry, neoclassical restraint, and luxurious detail. A superb example of French craftsmanship, this secretary desk would make a distinguished addition to any collection or interior, reflecting both artistry and aristocratic taste Dimensions: 52.5 inches high x 32 inches wide x 20 inches deep.
