Secretary furniture in precious wood, stamped J. Popsel, Louis XV - 18th century

About the Item

A rare and beautiful Louis XV writing desk, stamped Popsel, inlaid with precious wood. This commissioned piece of furniture is a unique and extraordinary model, specially crafted by one of the greatest Parisian cabinetmakers in the mid-18th century for an important figure at the court of Louis XV. Jean Popsel was a cabinetmaker of German origin, born in 1720. He worked for several years as a favored craftsman in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine, before becoming a master craftsman on July 5, 1755. Until the end of the reign of Louis XV, he lived on Rue Traversière. He then moved to Rue Saint-Nicolas and continued working there after 1785. Known for his harmonious furniture, Popsel has created a unique piece of furniture with ideal proportions. This one also bears the Jurande hallmark (JME). This piece of furniture features a gendarme hat-shaped cornice at its top, composed of a groove and a quarter round. At the top, two large doors are each adorned with a rosewood butterfly-shaped veneer. Around them, a band cut from the inside forms a flowing line. These doors are fitted with original bronze entryways and a lock in perfect working order. The left door benefits from an original sliding system and a post-18th-century key. These two doors open onto a large storage space with two original oak shelves, adjustable on a rack. Furthermore, this piece of furniture features a wide drop-leaf door whose front is also veneered with two compositions of leaves arranged in butterfly wings. The original lock is in perfect condition, accompanied by a bronze entry and a later key. When opened, the flap is held in place by original brass stays. It is upholstered in original brown leather with a cold-stamped vignette. The oak interior features two drawers on each side, each with a fine wood veneer front decorated with an original bronze knob and rosette. There are also deep niches of varying sizes. Furthermore, this piece features two other doors in the lower section, also inlaid with a butterfly wing. The lock and bronze entry are original. The interior features a fixed shelf on cleats. Refined and elegant, this Parisian-quality writing desk by Popsel will delight you with its luminous fine woods and harmonious lines. ********* Period: 18th century Excellent condition Finish: French polish.
