About the Item

An exceptional vintage Hepplewhite-style secretary by Maddox, circa 1930s. This beautiful specimen is made from mahogany with an upper bookcase having double mullioned glass doors over a central compartment with tambour doors. The doors open to secretary storage with six pigeon holes set between six satinwood inlaid drawers, surmounted by a drop front desk. The desk surface is set over two dovetailed satinwood inlaid drawers and raised over square tapered legs. Bookcase shelves have plate grooves for china. Original label inside of drawer as well as along the backside. The desk is modeled after John and Thomas Seymour's Federal Period secretary that was designed in 1806-10 and currently housed at the Fine Arts Museum in Boston, MA. The Maddox Table Company began operation in 1898. It ceased operation around 1985. Dimensions: 36" x 19" x 71.5"h, writing surface 30"
