Japanese Wabi-Sabi Shelf Made of Bamboo and Wood / Meiji-Taisho Era / 1868-1920

About the Item

This is an old Japanese shelf made in the Meiji-Taisho period (1868-1920). It is made of bamboo and chestnut board, and you can enjoy the unique grain of chestnut, and the sculptural bamboo frame is very beautiful. Chestnut trees have been used since ancient times in Japan, and are used as building materials for shrines and temples, as well as for high-end furniture. Chestnuts contain tannins, and the color changes to dark brown over time. The chestnuts on this shelf are also dark brown and look very cool. As for bamboo, straight and thin bamboo is used, and it is bent by heating to make a square frame. The two materials are very compatible, and you can see the unique Japanese sense of beauty. Although it is a small shelf, it has a very strong presence and can be placed anywhere. It is a rare item that is hard to obtain. Highly recommended. There are small cracks in the bamboo, but there is no problem. There is also a crack in one chestnut board, but I don't think it will progress further. Weight: 2.85kg. If you want something special, we recommend purchasing our selected items. We mainly sell carefully selected old Japanese items. I've seen tens of thousands of items so far. Based on that experience, only selected items are posted here. We are able to do this because of our long experience. There may be items on the 1stdibs site that look and feel the same, but our selection is unique.
