About the Item

Gigi Radice for Studio Gino Colombo, custom made wall unit, walnut, seagrass, Italy, 1950s. This custom-made wall unit by Gigi Radice for Studio Gino Colombo, crafted in 1950s Italy, is a clear reflection of mid-century modern ideals, but it communicates those values through quiet rigor rather than flamboyance. Its shape is simple at first glance; a large rectangular block, but the internal logic of its composition reveals a more deliberate, even architectural approach. The front face is defined by a strict grid: four rows and eight columns of square compartments, each with a single centered pull. The repetition is methodical, but softened by the organic materials – walnut framing each square and seagrass covering each door. The geometry is tight, the lines clean, but there is a rhythm to the design that keeps it from feeling sterile. Breaking this grid is a large open rectangular void, positioned slightly off-center. This void doesn’t just provide functional shelving; it creates contrast.   Please note that this piece is in used condition and could use some small superficial touch ups. Restoration can be done before shipping by our experienced craftspeople in our own in-house restoration atelier. With high attention for the original, they make sure every piece contains its value and is ready for the many years to come. We kindly ask you to contact our design experts for further information about the endless possibilities our restoration and upholstery atelier has to offer. Of course, a locally organized restoration is possible as well.

The Royal System shelving unit went on to win the gold medal at the Finland Furniture Fair in 1950 and silver medal at the XI Triennale di Milano 1957 and remained a hallmark of Scandinavian modern design throughout the 1950s and 1960s. Versatile and flexible floating bookcase that allows for continuous rearranging to suit individual needs. This original Cado Royal System is suitable for both living room, home office or library. The cabinet with the drop down woven front has one wide height adjustable shelf and two drawers. Can also be used as a secretary desk. The display cabinet with the double sliding glass doors also has one height adjustable shelf. The dresser module has four wide drawers. Two original sliding bookends...
