About the Item

A dramatic and exceptionally refined large-scale sideboard by Dassi, Italy, circa 1950s, featuring a luxurious parchment-clad exterior and a sculptural green marble base supported by entwined feather-form elements. With its rich materials, sweeping proportions, and ornamental detail, the piece gives off strong vintage ocean liner vibes—evoking the glamour and poise of mid-century transatlantic interiors where elegance met engineering. The case is clad in natural parchment (goatskin), a rare and luxurious material prized for its smooth surface, tonal depth, and tactile richness. Traditionally hand-stretched, scraped, and polished, parchment gained popularity in high-end furniture design from the 1930s to 1950s, favored for its ability to develop a warm, luminous patina over time. This example retains its original finish, now beautifully aged to a soft, organic glow with subtle natural variation. The interior is crafted in bleached maple, inlaid with green-dyed pinstripes—a finely detailed and highly unusual flourish that enhances the sense of custom craftsmanship. The contrast between the restrained exterior and the vibrant, tailored interior reveals Dassi’s sophisticated approach to design and detail. Based in Lissone, Dassi was among Italy’s most refined cabinetmakers of the postwar period, often collaborating with prominent architects like Gio Ponti. Their work blended classical references with modern lines and rich materiality, frequently produced in small batches or for private commissions. A statement piece of sculptural Italian design—ideal for dining rooms, entryways, or curated interiors that embrace mid-century sophistication with a whisper of art deco inspiration.
