19th Century Bronze, Wood and Marble Service Vitrine by Francois Linke, France

About the Item

Late 19th century Louis XVI bronze, wood, and marble service vitrine by Francois Linke. France By: Francois Linke Material: wood, marble, stone, bronze, copper, metal, glass, crystal, tin Technique: cast, molded, metalwork, polished, gilt, varnished, patinated Dimensions: 23 in x 63.5 in x 41 in Date: late 19th century, circa 1890 Style: Louis XVI, Neoclassical, Belle Époque Place of origin: France A distinguished Louis XVI-style service vitrine crafted in France in the late 19th century by the renowned ébéniste François Linke. The piece combines a harmonious interplay of materials—gilt bronze mounts, curved beveled glass, and richly grained wood, all crowned by a veined Bordeaux marble top. The central door and lateral bombé vitrines enclose glass shelving, subtly supported by slender, fluted legs capped in gilt bronze. The drawer and door mechanisms exhibit the precision and fluidity typical of fine cabinetmaking of the 19th century. Contrasts between the lustrous bronze accents and the warm tones of the wood create a refined equilibrium, further emphasized by the soft patina that time has imparted. The gilt appliqués—stylized rosettes and acanthus motifs—punctuate the structure without excess, underscoring the neoclassical lineage of the piece. The signature of Linke is discreetly engraved into the bronze, confirming the maker's hand. François Linke (1855–1946) was a preeminent Parisian cabinetmaker whose work bridged traditional craftsmanship and modern refinement. Celebrated for his collaborations with sculptor Léon Messagé, Linke’s furniture was awarded at the 1900 Exposition Universelle, establishing his international acclaim.
