About the Item

This towering wardrobe dates to circa 1840s, during what’s known as the Louis Philippe period in France, a time when furniture began to shift toward refined, functional elegance. Though many similar pieces online are often mislabeled as “Victorian American,” this one tells a different story. Its construction, detailing, and interior features point unmistakably to continental European craftsmanship most likely French or Belgian. You won’t find a maker’s mark or label (as is typical with pieces of this age), but the evidence lies in the build. The flowing cartouche-style crown, with its scrolling foliate carvings and central shield form, mirrors the motifs favored in French furniture of the 1830s and 1840s. The body of the piece sits low to the ground, originally constructed without feet, which was common in European cabinetry though it has since been thoughtfully fitted with bun feet for added stability and modern functionality. One of the most telling clues lies inside: a full row of original double and triple brass hooks lines the upper cavity. At a time when rods were not yet common, especially in European homes, this hook system offered space-saving practicality and was a typical feature of mid 19th century French and Belgian wardrobes. Unlike many American examples of the era that favored external drawers, this one also features interior drawers, another hallmark of European design. The wood appears to be European walnut, favored for its strength, fine grain, and warm tone. The result is a piece that not only served a practical purpose in its time but continues to offer elegance, function, and historical presence today. Whether used for clothing, linens, or simply as a statement in your space, this armoire carries nearly two centuries of quiet resilience and craftsmanship within it. Available now with original keys and locks, reinforced structure, and free nationwide shipping. 56w x 19.5d x 102h
