19th Century Original Painted Pine Armoire German Shrunk with Birds
About the Item
It is the painted birds in the top two panels that first captures one's attention in this lovely armoire. This original painted "German Shrunk" was built in the traditional manner to "break down" into 2 sections, making it easier to transport and install, all resting on large bun feet.
The original polychrome painted finish (which is a wonderful example of the stylized faux painting of the era) has teal blue, red and ochre/cream colored accents. The sides, canted sides, and crown with dentil carving are also beautifully embellished with decorative painting.
Notice the original hardware including the hinges, lock, key and keyhole cover. While the key and lock still function, everything (including left door) must be lined up perfectly for the lock to "hold." Otherwise, the key may also be used simply as a pull.
The armoire shows expected age related wear as seen in the level of distress to the paint, wear, raw edges, scratches/dings/nicks expected in an item that is over 160 years old.
This impressive armoire has been restored and lightly waxed, protecting the lovely original hand-painted flourishes which make it such a special find. It is in solid/stable condition and is ready to be used and enjoyed. Top shelf was replaced at some point in time.
All scratches, cracks, dings, and age related separation are reflective of age and do not detract from the beauty nor function of this special German shrunk.
Please refer to professional photos for clear understanding of color, condition, and details; photo lighting, individual monitor display and home lighting all impact how item is viewed. Photos are part of item description, please ask questions or request additional photos of specific areas if needed.
