Antique Elizabethan Carved Oak Revival Livery Housekeepers Cupboard Cabinet 1860

About the Item

An elegantly extravagant antique 16th Century Elizabethan Revival carved oak livery or housekeeper's cupboard, England, Circa 1860. The cupboard is in two sections the top section having hemispherical carvings representing a cut pineapple fruit, which was first brought back from the Americas in the late 1500's, during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I (1558-1603). Below is a frieze of corresponding hemispherical carvings flanked by a pair of circular columns above twin doors, each door is carved with four arched panels with ribbed pilasters with diamond shaped lozenges with carved circular devices. The base also with twin doors having corresponding carving & flanked by a pair of carved bearded male supports, these are the male versions of a caryatid, known as a telamon or atlas. The sides of the cupboard are paneled & have some carved decoration, the cabinet stands on three carved claw feet. Both the top and base have the original functioning locks and keys, the top cupboard can receive three shelves or a hanging rail, the base cupboard provides more storage. The cabinet is made from solid ebonized oak and has a wonderful warm patina & has just lovingly received a vigorous wax polish in Bloomsbury's professional workshops This wonderful & whimsical Elizabethan Revival livery cupboard is in very good condition and is ready to grace your home.

The armoire having a ogee stepped cornice (the cornice is removable), below is a shell shaped carving and a pair of carved doors, with panels carved in relief, the doors are fitted with the original hand forged steel lock escutcheons & door length steel barrel hinges, a key is present and the lock works with ease.
