Early 18th Century Bleached French Walnut Armoire from the Île-de-France Region
About the Item
Typical of Ile-de-France furniture from the early 1700’s, this walnut armoire has unadorned panels, allowing the beautiful, curved moldings to take prominence. The walnut wood has been stripped of its original finish and bleached, leaving the wood a light beige.
An en chapeau arch tops the crown, which has several layers of molding surrounding a cavetto cornice. The two asymmetrically shaped thick doors beneath feature sinuous panels. In the center of two of the panels is a series of concentric stars surrounded by a circle. These panels are bordered by lunettes and two pierced and sinuous keyplates. Both doors open on iron hinges to reveal four full-length shelves. The third shelf is much thicker than the others as it houses two half-drawers with wooden knobs. The doors are closed via full length, polished steel crémaillères.
The side panels consist of three panels: a horizontal rectangle in between larger, vertically aligned rectangles with arbalete tops. A thick molding at the base wraps around all sides of the armoire, concealing a full-length pullout drawer on the front (not shown in photos). The flat, plinth-like base precedes the curvaceous feet of the future Louis XV style which permit the piece to be used in a greater variety of interior styles. The wood was joined with square pegs and reinforced by four large iron dowels on each side.
This antique bleached armoire from France has a neutral color with subtle yet elegant ornamentation. It would have been produced in the area surrounding Paris, around the year 1710.

View AllEarly 18th Century Walnut and Olive Wood Armoire from Eastern France
Located in Dallas, TX
This unique armoire from the early 1700’s was made from walnut and olive wood and features a plinth base with central cherub mascaron along the crown. At just under 86 inches tall and 78 wide at the crown, this armoire has a more manageable size, compared to many of the very large armoires of the same period. The unique construction allows it to be easily disassembled for transport.
At one point, this walnut and olive wood armoire was the property of a chocoladefabriek (chocolate factory) in Strasbourg, located in the region of Alsace, near the German border. It was originally one armoire in a pair that were commissioned in Eastern France in the early 1700s. The ebeniste who created the armoire decided to use olive wood for the door panels and some of the side panels. Olive wood was a highly valued wood among wood workers of the 18th century because of its pretty color and the richness and nuances of its veining.
In the center of the crown is a foliate and floral ring surrounding a cherub mascaron. The crown and the top of the door frames have both been carved in an arch, mirroring the shape of the door moldings. Each door is mounted on iron hinges and separated by recessed molding into three uniquely shaped panels of olive wood (the rest of the armoire is constructed with walnut). Both upper panels of the doors are adorned with a series of undulating C-scrolls, while the bottom panels are rectangles with concave tops. The two sections are separated by a simple ovate center panel.
Armoires date back the 17th century when French menuisiers created the storage cabinet to house clothing. Early armoires such as this one were without feet (plinth style base) and were often seen in paneled boiserie...

Louis XIV Cherrywood Commode from France, Early 18th Century
Located in Dallas, TX
The straight grain and rich color of the cherry tree made it a desirable wood for constructing luxury furniture during the 18th century. One beautiful example is our period Louis XIV commode, which was hand-carved in France in the early 1700’s.
Augmenting the lovely reddish-brown color of the commode is an arbalete top that slightly hangs over the three stacked drawers below. Each drawer has three bronze foliate fittings set inside geometric panels with recessed molding (two pierced foliate swag pulls flanking a small keyplate surrounded by a parted leaf). There is a unique, shallow pullout drawer with two concentric circle pulls built into the molded frieze. This drawer was most likely used to store jewelry and other small valuables.
Canted corners can be seen along the front of the shaped top, with elongated asymmetrical panels beneath that flank the tiers of drawers...
