About the Item

This impressive and commanding wardrobe made in France at the end of the 19th century is almost certainly by Masion Krieger; While not stamped certain details are directly relatable to other stamped works by the firm. We have found two other large empire pieces that have identical figural mounts as well as the raised half flat pilasters with mahogany three part capitals that form the upper area above the lower panel along with the way the locks and hinges are placed and their physical attachment. A further confirmation can be seen in the way the crotch mahogany veneers are applied and the choice of woods to create the wardrobe. For an identical use of woods one has but to examine the Ringling's Sarasota Florida estate Ca' d'Zan bedroom furniture by Krieger. This suit of furniture completely done in crotch mahogany and ormolu have many comparisons. The firm founded in 1826 became a major force in the furniture market for wealthy Parisians as well and the gilded age american industrialist who patronized the company. They exhibited in all the major fairs and won numerous awards for creating rich formal furniture in all the revival styles. This particular cabinet retains its original lock and key and has many shelves (please see photos) and a single drawer housed within. It also has a rich old surface with much of its original french polish that has mellowed well and retains much of its shine.
