Small Biedermeier Wardrobe, Walnut, Southern Germany, circa 1830

About the Item

Small antique Biedermeier wardrobe Southwest Germany Walnut Biedermeier circa 1830 Dimensions: H x W x D: 171 x 99 x 52 cm Description: Two-door piece of furniture standing on round feet at the front and block feet at the back. The front of the furniture is dominated by the interestingly grained and bookmatched walnut veneer, the grain of which runs from the plinth to the top edge of the top panel. The doors are flanked by two half-columns that rest on the feet at the bottom and support the cornice at the top. The exceptionally beautifully designed sides of the cabinet are also worthy of mention. The silky, iridescent, figured walnut veneer is also laid neatly and symmetrically here. We understand the term "fluted" to mean the diagonal striped cross pattern that you can clearly see in the photos. This type of cross-bracing is very rare and occurs when the wood does not grow straight but in a wavy pattern in the trunk. Inside the cabinet, three shelves divide the storage space into four large compartments. Worth knowing: Small cupboards like the one offered here were primarily used to store laundry and are therefore also known as "white goods cupboards". They were used in bedrooms and children's rooms. Due to their shallow depth, they are also suitable for passageways, such as hallways. Condition: Good old-restored condition with slight signs of age and wear as well as older veneer repairs in the plinth area. The right-hand door is minimally warped in the lower area; this can be clearly seen in the photo, which shows the left-hand side view. Comparable pieces of furniture can be found in the reference book: Rainer Haaff - Biedermeierwelten p. 110
