Native American Furniture

NATIVE AMERICAN STYLE

Native American broadly describes any Indigenous people in North America and encompasses hundreds of tribes and groups, all with distinct cultures. Native American–style furniture and decor likewise varies widely, from pieces created by Indigenous people to those appropriated by non-native designers.

Indigenous furniture’s rich heritage includes the bentwood boxes of the Northwest Coast carved from cedar for storing household or ceremonial objects. Generations of Native American people have made baskets for holding household items, with those in the Northeast using sweetgrass and those in the Southeast using pine needles and wicker. Artisans in the Plateau region wove watertight pieces like cradles from plant materials. Although these objects were intricately made, they were usually utilitarian rather than decorative.

The colonization of North America and the removal of Indigenous people from their lands led to the suppression of these practices. Many styles that used Native American motifs — such as Southwestern style, which was heavily influenced by the geometric patterns of Navajo textiles — have historically not involved Indigenous creators and, instead, have taken their traditions without their tribal context.

When decorating a home with Native American–style furniture, it is important to do so respectfully, by understanding the origins of motifs and objects and examining who profits from their sale. There are now Indigenous-led companies, such as Cherokee designer Cray Bauxmont-Flynn’s Amatoya and Totem House Design, promoting Indigenous work in furniture and home decor. Supporting Indigenous artists and artisans is essential to confronting the still pervasive issue of cultural appropriation in design.

Antique Native American Indian Teec Nos Pos Navajo-Style Rug Textile
Located in Dallas, TX
78662 Small Square Antique Teec Nos Pos Navajo Rug, 02'00 x 02'00. Behold the modern desert elegance of the Southwest, marrying the nomadic charm of Native American culture in this small handwoven wool antique Teec Nos Pos Navajo rug. This enchanted Navajo rug weaves together the geometric patterns of the Native American spirit with the earthy hues of the desert, forming a beguiling work of art. The described Teec Nos Pos Navajo rug is a visually striking piece, characterized by its 2 x 2 square dimensions and a vibrant color palette. Central to its design is a stepped cross and diamond motif in the middle, prominently featuring the colors red, gray, and orange. This central diamond draws immediate attention, creating a focal point that anchors the overall design and beckons forth the spirits of ancient wisdom. In each of the four corners of the rug, there are concentric squares on a neutral gray backdrop that add to its symmetry and balance. The top left and bottom right corners feature concentric squares in red and golden ochre, while the top right and bottom left corners display squares in purple and golden ochre. These contrasting colors create a harmonious yet dynamic visual effect, enhancing the rug's appeal and showcasing the weaver's skill in color coordination. While Teec Nos Pos rugs...

Indian Chief Motif Porcelain Humidor, American, circa 1900
Located in Incline Village, NV
Fine quality hand painted porcelain humidor is in excellent all original condition with no chips, repairs, or overpaint; nice bright crisp paint and detail. No mark, but definitely American, circa 1900 era. Note the detail to the Indian's face and his elaborate headdress. Native American Indians were especially attracted to tobacco and related products and relished the opportunity to pose for pictures on that topic; note cigar store "Indians", match safes, and humidors. This is a very desirable and item of tobacciana with the Indian subject matter and the attractive multicolored hand painted Indian chief with headdress, probably of note but I have not been able to accurately identify him; quite possibly "Big Bow" an Indian warrior who has been identified on other similar objects. Grace Young...
