About the Item

Introducing a rare Modernist Cube end table designed by the influential Jack Cartwright for Founders. Simultaneously monolithic and petite, regal yet understated this incredible table is in stunning original condition. Featuring intricate joinery, a perfectly level top and mesmerizing variegated woodgrains this of accent table is perfect for collectors and designers alike. Jack Cartwright was prolific American designer of the Mid-Century period and produced a large body of work, many pieces of which are still in production to this day. After serving in the military Cartwright returned to his home state of Michigan in 1950 where he attended the Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids. He excelled in furniture and product design and graduated Designer of the Year in 1953.In August of 1953, Jack married fellow student and Interior Design Major, Mary Lee Finnigan and they moved to High Point NC where he began his long career in furniture as a designer for Heritage Furniture Company. In 1956, he joined Founders Furniture as head designer and vice-president of the company. Over the years he received numerous awards for his furniture designs, residential and contract, and those designs gained him special recognition in the U.S. and abroad. Founders Furniture Company was a short-lived 20th-century American brand that produced enduring Mid-Century Modern designs. The company's streamlined dressers, lounge chairs and coffee tables feature solid wood construction and simple but elegant designs. The history of Founders Furniture Company began in 1946 when it was established as a subsidiary of Knoll Inc. During its years of operation, Founders hired celebrated American modernist designers like Milo Baughman and David Parmelee, who created sleek commodes and sideboards in mahogany and rosewood for the brand. Michigan native Jack Cartwright, a designer at Heritage during the 1950s, also worked at Founders as head designer before moving on to start his eponymous furniture company in 1963. Founders continued operations until 1965 when Thomasville Furniture acquired it. Established in 1904 in North Carolina — home to other iconic mid-century brands such as Drexel and Broyhill — Thomasville expanded significantly during the 1960s and purchased several other American furniture manufacturers. Today, the timeless styles and exceptional craftsmanship associated with Founders Furniture Company pieces continue to render them desirable for today’s interiors. Perfect in both home and office settings this captivating table can also serve as a pedestal to showcase artwork making it ideal for art studios searching for the perfect display that is a piece of art in and of itself. The pleasing cube shape, mixed with outstanding woodgrains makes it able to blend seamlessly against a multitude of design backdrops from Mid-Century Modern to Brutalism to Contemporary and everything in between. This table is incredibly difficult to find, especially in such excellent original condition. The mix of solid and match-book veneered walnut is in very good shape given it's age showing one area of minor discoloration and small scratches which can be seen clearly in the detail photos and natural light video provided. With that said the walnut is in very good shape and variegated woodgrains unique to the species is absolutely arresting in natural light.
