About the Item

An Italian Eglomise Top Painted and Gilt Coffee Table. A rectangular painted wood coffee table featuring a raised gallery surround and an églomisé-painted Glass top panel. The top is centered by a large oval reserve depicting a softly rendered sky scene, executed in reverse glass painting technique directly on the surface of the panel. Surrounding the central oval is a symmetrical border composed of alternating circular and square painted cartouches. The sixteen roundels portray detailed architectural ruins, classical monuments, and romanticized landscapes, while the smaller square panels depict stylized floral motifs, cornucopia designs, and decorative emblems in warm tones of gold, red, and green against black and cream grounds. Each painted section is outlined by narrow linear borders in contrasting colors, visually organizing the composition into a geometric framework. The decorative surface is applied directly to a solid wooden substrate and is not covered by protective glazing. The table is raised on four straight, tapered legs that terminate in brass casters. Each leg is adorned with recessed vertical panels accented in parcel gilt and outlined with painted borders, echoing the palette used on the tabletop. The apron is framed on all four sides with elongated rectangular reserves, painted in muted tones and accented with gilt detailing within molded linear surrounds. Additional gilt accents appear on the chamfered edges and framing moldings, lending definition to the architectural structure of the piece. The overall construction is based on traditional joinery methods, with mortise-and-tenon joints securing the legs to the apron. The tabletop is fixed into a recessed frame that supports and protects the painted surface along its perimeter. This type of églomisé decoration—where painting is done on the reverse side of glass or a similar support—was popular in the neoclassical and revivalist traditions, particularly in decorative furniture and architectural interiors. The table’s painted elements and classical motifs suggest inspiration from Italian Grand Tour aesthetics, likely intended for a formal salon or drawing room setting. Italy, Circa: 1900.
