About the Item
This is an old Japanese low table, which is believed to have been used for reading and writing in temple schools from the Edo to Meiji periods.
The side is carved into a heart shape, creating a striking and unusual design.
Made from cedar wood, it is believed to have been assembled without nails at the time, showing the high level of skill of the craftsmen of the time. Nails were later used for repairs.
The surface has changed over time, and perhaps because it was used near the hearth, it has a natural black color due to soot.
It also has a luster that is expressed by people using it for many years, and it has a quaint beauty that cannot be expressed with paint.
Its simple structure creates a beautiful silhouette in the space.
