About the Item

This antique tenjin desk was crafted in the Meiji Era (1868–1912). Originally used in traditional terakoya (temple schools), this low writing desk was designed for a lifestyle where people sat directly on the floor. Today, its modest height also makes it well-suited for use as a display table. Made from fine-quality Japanese zelkova (keyaki) wood, the desk showcases careful craftsmanship throughout, from the solid top to the turned legs. It features a single drawer, offering both practical function and balance in design. Over the years, the wood has developed a rich patina and luster, radiating the quiet beauty that only time can create. On the front is a carved family crest known as "Maru ni Sumidate Yotsume". A kamon is a traditional Japanese family emblem, and this particular design features four bold square "eyes" arranged within a circle—symbolizing structure and distinction. The crest adds a subtle sense of dignity to the desk’s calm presence. Whether used as a writing desk or a display stand for cherished objects, this piece offers a refined blend of history, craftsmanship, and timeless beauty. As an antique piece, minor scratches and marks may be present, each adding to its unique charm and the story it tells over time. Cleaned and disinfected with non-toxic solution. The drawers moves smoothly. We have conducted a meticulous check for any broken or damaged areas, and the result is absolutely problem-free. It is in excellent condition.
