Missisquoi 01 Coffee Table (Edition 5 of 13) by Simon Johns
About the Item
Missisquoi 01 is a numbered and asymmetrical two part coffee or cocktail table, with a space that divides it as the river divides the Missisquoi Valley. The black ashwood was felled, milled and dried near the studio, and the stone is from the river's banks. The stone and plank that support the two parts form a continuous axis end to end, through the divide. The beauty of the Brutalist natural stone contrasts and converses with the delicate craftsmanship of the wood plateau. The perimeter of the tables parts are tapered down to a thin edge, evoking the strength of steel plate and recalling the sculptures of Richard Serra. This listing is for one 'total composition' of two wooden parts and one stone. The two separate pieces are meant to be together, 4 inches apart, but could also be separated on either side of a sofa.
Pictured here is piece number 5 of an edition of 13.
The Missisquoi collection is a series of numbered one-of-a-kind pieces. The furniture attempts to illustrate a conversation between the fabricated and the elemental, a dichotomy of control vs. imperfection and our emotional response to such contrasting material qualities. The singularity of the end tables, each designed and built from a unique found stone from the Missisquoi river valley, makes for one of-a-kind collectible pieces of functional art. The collection of side tables or end tables, debuted during NY Design Week 2017 at Sight Unseen Offsite.

Simon Johns is a Canadian fine arts-trained designer working out of the woods in southern Quebec. He approaches design with hands-on studio experiments closer to sculpture than to design. His work draws from relations between the manufactured product and the raw surroundings of the studio's wooded location. His work has been shown at Sight Unseen Offsite for NY Design Week in 2016 and 2017, at Wanted Design Manhattan 2016 and 2017, and at the Toronto Design Offsite (TODO) 2017 and 2018.
