Paolo Buffa Style Italian Art Deco Coffee Table With Glass Top

About the Item

We kindly suggest that you read the entire description, as with it we try to give you detailed technical and historical information to guarantee the authenticity of our objects. The elegant and distinctive Italian Art Dèco coffee table is made of light walnut wood; the smooth-edged top is lightened by a transparent glass that allows us to enjoy the entire refined structure of the coffee table; exceptional is the graceful and harmonious design of the legs that are joined together by a peak top below with grid work; a streamlined, pleasing and sophisticated aesthetic ensemble. The coffee table was handcrafted from light walnut wood in Lombardy ( Italy) between 1950 and 1955 in the Paolo Buffa style; we know for a fact that the famous architect Buffa used Lombard cabinetmakers of recognized skill for the construction of his furniture, who used very refined materials also because the objects were intended mainly for the apartments of the wealthy Milanese bourgeoisie; our coffee table with its characteristics of quality, accuracy and finish, was almost certainly made to one of those master craftsmen. Paolo Buffa (1903-1970) was an Italian architect and designer known for his mid-century furniture designs. Characterized by a fusion of tradition and modernity, he used a combination of low-profile, straight-curved forms in fine woods to produce his most classic pieces. Paolo Buffa began working in Gio Ponti's studio and later, as early as 1928, as indicated by period documentation, in close collaboration with architect A. Cassi Ramelli. He devoted himself mainly to designing furniture by continuously proposing new models. More than a forerunner, he is a faithful spokesman of the taste of his time: neoclassical first and novecentist later. Paolo Buffa was highly regarded internationally for his refined design and rigorous execution, displaying a singularly Italian expertise. Before he died in 1970 in Milan, Italy, Buffa had been named one of the country's leading designers. The object has been hand-treated with ancient restoration techniques by our team of artisans and is in excellent condition. Measurements diameter cm.75, height cm.50. Louis Philippe Style Feather Walnut Coffee Table With Tripod North Italy
Located in Prato, Tuscany
We kindly suggest you read the whole description, because with it we try to give you detailed technical and historical information to guarantee the authenticity of our objects. Elegant round coffee table from northern Italy with "orange slice" veneered with walnut-feather; the central stem of the tripod is in hexagonal solid wood; the three final supports, always in solid wood, are shaped and well whittled with simple and rigorous lines; at the center of the table, there is a delicate and refined inlay reproducing a rose, made by hand with soft precious woods, the two peripheral circles of the top are always inlaid. The most interesting and compelling feature of this table is the workmanship with which it was made: the " wood veneer"( Attention. The exact term is Italian "lastronatura" untranslatable in English, in fact, the "lastronatura" is very different and older than “wood veneer”. Read explanation later). The”lastronatura” is an artisan technique that spread already during the sixteenth century and remained unchanged until the mid-nineteenth century before the Industrial Revolution; it consisted of hand-cutting the trunks of noble wood (walnut, mahogany, briar, walnut-feather, etc.) with ancient saws in so many layers with thicknesses ranging from 4 to 6 millimeters, which were then applied to furniture for decorative purposes; the finishing of this procedure was very complex: the wood layer was treated with natural earth dissolved in water for the desired shade, it was aged with stone, fixed with shellac applied with a brush and finally polishing was performed in 12 steps...
