Important Neoclassical late 18th Century Italian Giltwood Console Table

About the Item

Very fine and extraordinary North-Italian console table of large proportions with a beautiful marble top (Brèche Médicis). The entire console table is richly decorated with classicist style elements. Rectangular basic shape on four fluted legs, which are connected to each other with an x-shaped stretcher. The front of the frieze is decorated with hanging garlands of flowers, the frieze itself with a central lion's head and sculpted leaf and flower motifs. The finely detailed carving of this elegant console is characteristic of the circle of carvers and cabinetmakers in Turin who were patronized by the royal family. The most famous of these was Giuseppe Maria Bonzanigo (1745-1820), who worked for the court from 1773. However, other skilled craftsmen such as Francesco Tanadei, Giuseppe Marchino, Francesco Bolgie and Bartolomeo Manghetti, who worked with Bonzanigo, were also commissioned to provide work for Stupinigi, Moncalieri, Venaria, Rivoli and above all for the Palazzo Reale in the center of Turin. Provenance: According to the previous owner, this console table originally came from the Villa del Principe Palazzo di Andrea Doria in Genoa.
