About the Item

Free-standing desk, oak, brass, linoleum, Italy, 1950s This mid-century modern freestanding desk from 1950s Italy exemplifies a sculptural approach to furniture design. It speaks to a moment in Italian design when craftsmanship was merging with modernist ideals, resulting in objects that were not only useful, but sculptural, inhabited, and deeply considered. Both utility and elegance are expressed through an orchestration of volume, rhythm, and surface articulation. The side reveals one of the more sculpturally assertive elements of the desk’s construction: a striking, angular cutout in the side panel of the pedestal. It recalls modernist architectural gestures, where structural weight is visually lightened through incision and asymmetry. The top’s surface, generously scaled and concave in form, draws attention through its vibrant, expressive oak grain often referred to as tiger oak for its wavy, stripe-like figure which is contrasted in shade. Around the back, the narrative continues with a remarkable application of book-matched veneer. Here, mirrored wood grain patterns unfurl across the vertical panels in symmetrical flourishes. This rear view, often overlooked in furniture not designed to be freestanding, signals that the piece was intended to occupy the center of a space, to be seen from all angles. Flanking the user are two drawer pedestals, each structured with vertical rhythm through the use of grissinato wood panels known for its ribbed or fluted treatment that adds tactile depth. This motif reappears on the upper drawers integrated in the top. The modest brass handles add a metallic accent. The desk’s foundation follows the same crescent curve clad in dark brown linoleum, emphasizing the weight and solidity of the overall composition. Kindly note that the piece is in good, used condition with some signs of age and use. For further details, we encourage you to reach out to our team of design specialists.
