About the Item

This formidible dining set was created in the 1920's by Maison Bellon, a prominent Lyonnaise furniture design and fabrication atelier. The woods? The finest: macassar ebony, rosewood, mahogany. Here we find craftsmanship of the highest calibre, with detail after detail attesting to the great design intelligence and acumen of La Maison Bellon. On page 44 of Thierry Roche's book "Les Arts Decoratifs a Lyon 1910 a 1950" you'll find pictures of the argenterie of this exact set, and a long history of La Maison Bellon. Thierry Roche is the hands-down Art Deco expert of Lyon... and probably the top-ranking in France! The 4-column, pedestal-supported table measures 49 inches square, with four 20-inch wide leaves for banquets, for a total of as much as 129 inches! In classic French style the leaves aren't finished; it is presumed that a large tablecloth or two will be brought into play for such occasions. The sous-chef might help with the installation of the leaves... which is quite easily accomplished. Moving the table itself isn't so easy, on the other hand; I suspect it weighs close to two hundred pounds, maybe more! Each corner of this octagonal dining table has a floral-decorated, gilded octagonal bronze plaque reminding the viewer of his close connection with Nature. The smaller server, "le dessert" en francais, measures about 47 inches wide and 18 deep. It's 41 inches tall to the top of the marble, and the mirror in back rises another 18 1/2 inches. The marble is primarily many shades of green, with veins of white. Note the elegant fluting on the legs, and the graceful drawer handles which bring to mind the organic designs of the earlier Art Nouveau era. The gilded bronze epaulettes, 14 in total throughout the set, amplify that connection with their cascading floral bouquets. The top display section of the "argenterie," or silver chest. stands almost 29 inches tall by itself, has a mirrored back and its original notched 1/4" glass shelf; the two beveled, macassar ebony outlined glass doors swing out to open. It's plenty roomy for the display of your most precious collection. Each cabinet on the lower left and right has four drawers for flatware, but the inserts are removeable, making the drawers useful for other odds and ends. The center cabinet has one shelf in the middle. This most handsome and versatile piece of furniture measures about 48 inches wide and 19 1/2 deep; overall height, 68 1/2 inches. It takes no less than four very strong men to lift the sideboard/buffet (I would not be included in that group), which measures 80 inches wide! Note the beautifully matched rosewood outlined by macassar ebony. There are bronze plaques inserted in the doors, the same plant form shown in the epaulette-like gilt-bronze details at the top of each fluted leg. The buffet's depth is 26 inches -- there's enough room inside to store all your serving pieces and then some... Not shown in these pictures is a gracefully curved mirror, exactly the same design as the mirror shown on the top of "le dessert." It extends the full eighty inches of the sideboard, and is about 20 inches high. Beveled, of course, and outlined along the top by a "twisted rope" brass embellishment ending on either end in a cast brass tassel, as is each back of the six chairs. Those six chairs are sturdy and extremely comfortable, still wearing their original green velvet covering (in definite need of replacement). They stand 36 1/2 inches tall, and the seats are 17 1/2 wide and 15 1/2 deep. Each chair weighs about 18 pounds. Yes, they're quite comfortable enough for those three-hour meals you'll be serving... It's hard to imagine that a set of this paramount quality, both design-wise and construction-wise, will ever be created again.
