Late 19th Century French Steel Large Industrial Table

About the Item

This very good table has all the elements associated with the finest of industrial furniture. Conceived at a time, circa 1890-1900 when art and industry were combined to create modern wonders of the age and who’s ideals had the intent of recreating for man a new way of life. The heavy metal supports are both industrial and neoclassical in design taking elements from Roman forms and marrying them to the new iron structures and manufacturing processes then being used in such things at the Effiel Tower, bridges and shipbuilding to modern high rise buildings. The splayed buttresses are strengthened by X-shaped stretchers with large central decorative medallions bolted in a very visible way all creating a sense of form and function with design and art. The tables top a simple slab of steel creates a work surface, magnificent desk or dining table that is virtually indestructible. The surface is original to the piece and has no attempt has been made to clean, polish or alter it from its as-found state. The top is removable allowing for easy handling and transportation.
