About the Item

The pair of tables was made in France between 1890 and 1900. Designed in the Louis XV style the pair has extensive hand-carved decorative elements including acanthus leaves, fluting and rosettes all picked out from the cream ground in a light ocher wash giving the carving depth and character. The marble tops are in a desirable grade of Rouge de Maine marble and the pair would look great as potted palm or plant stands, perhaps as bases for large candelabra or statuary. The pair seems to have been gilded originally and have since been painted cream with a nice old surface and patina. Please note in image 10 the old Sotheby's intake stickers on the bottom of one of the tables. The table is carved from mahogany, an interesting and expensive choice but one allowing for deeply detailed carving and good structural stability. The finish is an old dry paint...
