About the Item

This pair of side tables, designed by Giuseppe Scapinelli in the 1950s, crafted from Ivorywood (pau marfim) featuring exquisitely sculpted spider-like legs. These tables exhibit a striking two-tone design with black-painted and natural wood finishes. Each table is topped with a round glass top that accentuates its sculptural form, adding to its appeal in any living space. The legs and top structure are finished in black, while the arms supporting the glass top retain a natural wood tone. Following restoration, the wood showcases its original beauty and remains in excellent condition. About the designer: Giuseppe Scapinelli was an Italian-Brazilian furniture designer who worked primarily in the mid-20th century. He was known for his elegant and innovative designs, which often incorporated curved lines, tapered legs, and other elements that were ahead of their time. Scapinelli's work was heavily influenced by the Art Deco and Bauhaus movements, as well as his own personal experiences as an immigrant to Brazil. He produced a wide range of furniture pieces, including chairs, tables, cabinets, and more. His furniture was characterized by its sleek lines, minimalist aesthetic, and use of high-quality materials like exotic woods and brass. Scapinelli's designs were also notable for their attention to detail and commitment to quality, which made his pieces highly durable and long-lasting. Today, his work is highly sought after by collectors and design enthusiasts around the world. Scapinelli passed away in 1985 at the age of 75.

Brazilian Modern Coffee Table "Acqua" in Wood & Glass, Giuseppe Scapinelli, 1955
By Giuseppe Scapinelli
Located in New York, NY
Available today, this one-of-a-kind Brazilian Modern coffee table model ACQUA made in Ebony wood and glass by Giuseppe Scapinelli, 1950s, Brazil is nothing less than spectacular. There are three reasons why this iconic piece is so special: First, the coffee table (swivel structure and glass) haven't been altered. This specific design is very fragile resulting in very few of these existing today in its original shape. The wood has only been repainted and the glass has a couple of dents but besides that, the coffee table is in excellent condition. Second, this iconic design is one of Scapinelli most renowned, appearing in countless publications, such as Casa e Jardim publications (Brazil House & Garden) as well as Giuseppe Scapinelli’s book (images attached). Attached images Lastly, the piece is truly a masterpiece of design. The organic shape of the base truly evokes its name ACQUA (water in Italian) and the base can swivel on its axis changing dramatically in appearance looking like a different piece. The coffee table is showcased in our showroom next to a pair of Carlo Hauner armchairs, a Jorge Zalszupin Pullman Sofa...
