About the Item

For sale is an original signed museum-quality Magnum photographic print by world-renowned photographer Alec Soth (American, b. 1969). Titled "Sydney. Tallahassee, Florida. 2004", this Magnum print was a time-limited, hand-signed edition that was only available to purchase for a period of five days. The work is signed in black ink to the back on an affixed archival label, which carries the image’s accompanying text and is printed on Fuji Crystal Archive Matte paper. The photograph is mounted and presented in an elegant stained Oak wood frame. The accompanying text by the artist reads: "In 2004 I shot one of my first traveling editorial assignments in Tallahassee, Florida. I photographed a second-rate celebrity for an equally unimpressive magazine. My photographs were terrible. After the shoot I went to a local diner to drown my sorrows in fried chicken. When I walked in the door I saw a beautiful young girl falling asleep at her table. This was the moment I learned that the ability to choose my own subject was essential to my creative success. The picture I made that day became one of my all-time favorites." - Alec Soth About the Artist: Alec Soth shoots poetic, offbeat pictures of American lives and landscapes that balance a sense of alienation and intimacy. In the tradition of on-the-road documentary photography established by Walker Evans, Robert Frank, and William Eggleston, Soth captures the unexpected moments of beauty and strangeness he encounters on his travels; he’s less interested in narrative than in symbolic evocations of national history, identity, and politics. Soth first gained recognition with his series “Sleeping by the Mississippi” (first published in 2004), which features lush, painterly color prints of landscapes and portraits which he shot over five years of car trips along the Mississippi River. He has since received numerous awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2013. Soth has exhibited widely. His work has sold for up to six figures at auction and belongs in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, among other institutions. A member of the Magnum Photos collective, Soth has shot editorial commissions for clients including The New Yorker, Vogue, GQ, and WSJ. Magazine.
