About the Item
Based in Chicago, IL, contemporary artist Michael Thompson creates unique kites, collages and mixed media works assembled from material fragments of past and present collected in his travels. His ongoing series of large-scale kites bridge the gap between flat art and sculpture, each crafted of split bamboo frames covered with stretched canvas and a collage of vintage ephemera – including kimonos, obis, paintings, scrolls, drawings or anything with a story to tell.
In this kite entitled "Celestial Pond," Thompson seams together fragments of found obi silks and woven brocades to create a dreamy landscape of flowers and clouds. Long panels of sheer grey silk draw geometric forms against a creme-white field, subtly textured by a curving weave suggestive of crashing waves. Swirling forms of pattern and color float across composition, like fallen flowers on a still pond or clouds drifting sleepily across an open sky.

In “Furbelow II,” Thompson arranges scraps of Japanese silk to form a patchwork of contrasting pattern and color. Placed with balanced asymmetry, the panels of deep indigo and sheer silk create a dark, moody atmosphere reminiscent of a night sky. Gradients of light to dark evoke soft, moonlit clouds and delicate pine branches appear as forked bolts of...
