About the Item

"Sepia Chrysanthemum I" by Lauren Hua, 2023 Acrylic, tempera, acrylic wash, mixed media 27.5" x 21.5" In this special commission for the gallery by local Austin based artist Lauren Hua, chrysanthemums, boldly painted in stark grays and whites, are presented on a warm sepia and gray toned background that is both contrasting and complementary. Splashes of metallic bronze, copper, and gold enliven the canvas. The painting is wonderfully textured. Paint seems to jump off the canvas in places, having been built up, scraped, sculpted, and molded by the artist. In other places, the paint has been pushed aside, revealing the loose weave of the canvas below. The finish alternates between matte and glossy, catching the light in surprising and delightful ways as it dances over the work. The painting does not end at the edge of the canvas either, but extends over the sides, creating a more cohesive work, and negating the need of a frame. Signed to the side "LHUA" within a raised gilt cartouche. Chrysanthemums have long been cherished in Asian culture, associated with beauty, health, and wealth. They are a one of the Flowers of the Four Seasons representing Autumn, and one of the Four Gentlemen (along with plum, bamboo, and orchid), espousing Confucian ideals of a cultivated mind unencumbered by the world. Chrysanthemums also hold a special place in Lauren's heart. She describes their significance and how they feature in her work: "Chrysanthemums symbolize nobility and elegance, as well as longevity and perseverance since they can withstand the cold and are one of the few flowers that bloom in the fall. The stark white petals evoke a sense of unblemished beauty, quiet strength and an almost ethereal quality. This simplicity contrasts starkly with the rich and complex backdrop made with hundreds of textured hills and valleys on a sea of bronze, browns and grays. The fact that they bloom when most other flowers are fading, signifies resilience and the ability to thrive even in the most adverse conditions. A distinction they carry with grace." Lauren Hua talks about her works, inspiration, and process below: "Drawn to the tactile nature of texture, I use strong applications of modeling paste and mixed media to add depth and dimension to my pieces. Each piece is a study of layers, continuously built upon one another until the final balance and vision is reached. What typically starts with watered acrylic pours to create a fluid, watercolor effect, texture is then built with modeling paste and acrylics thickly applied with palette knives. While I typically gravitate towards softer, neutral hues, my signature touch lies in the incorporation of metallic accents, whether through metallic paint or the introduction of gold and silver foil. This element adds an understated yet captivating aspect to the overall elegant design. It's not intended to shock and awe, but to give the viewer a calm, muted joy. I draw inspiration from the perfectly symmetrical asymmetry in life and the world around me. It’s one of the reasons why I embrace the freedom of the abstract realm. There is freedom in it that allows for spontaneity and mistakes. Above all, I am an avid believer that beauty should be experienced at every possible moment, whether that is found in the perfect latte, a breathtaking view, or a stolen kiss. She strives to create art that communicates that belief, one that does not shock and awe, but gives the viewer a muted joy, peace and contentment that can be experienced everyday."
