Martin Kline is a painter, draughtsman, and sculptor, though these three practices sometimes blend in a single work. He was trained in studio art and was a student of Italian Renaissance painting, but it was not until he moved to New York in the 1980s that he began to explore abstract art. Now Kline works in an abstracted figural style, with references to flora, organisms, and mythological and literary characters. His particular sensitivity to natural motifs developed during the time Kline spent in the Hudson Valley. Martin Kline's paintings are done using encaustic, a process that uses hot pigment-enriched beeswax, which he applies with a brush. Each layer is built upon, often revealing the layers beneath. The transition between each layer creates an overall pattern or rhythm. His paintings display Kline’s fascination with the natural world, his shapes evoking flowers or fungi growing from a tree.
