Using 1500 clothes pins to combine painting and sculpture to a dramatic affect is what artist Annie Morris is most famed for. Each peg is individually painted using watercolours to create the naked female form. Her work usually encompasses lots of smaller pieces that are art in their own right, but come together to make one large piece with an overwhelming satisfaction. A social commentary exploring the relationship between the individual and the influence they can have on their surroundings, Annie’s work provides a great sense of perspective. Provenance: Winston Wachter Gallery, Wells and Company Biography Annie Morris was born in 1978 in London, where she still lives and works. Between 1997 and 1998 she studied at Foundation, St. Martins College of Art and Design. In 1998 she started her experience at Giuseppe Penone’s Studio, and then attended the École des Beaux Arts in Paris. In the period between 2002 and 2003, she completed her academic career at London Slade School of Art. In 2000 she won the Homer Scholarship Award, and in 2002, she received an award for her drawing skills from the École des Beaux Arts. It was 2003 when Annie Morris came into the public eye for her collaboration with her longtime friend Sophie Dahl (granddaughter of the famous British children’s writer Roald Dahl) on the book Man with the Dancing Eyes. Morris has stated that she does not feel attached to a singular medium, and prefers to characterize her work as “usually made up of lots of smaller pieces that come together to make one big piece.” Among her best-known works are painting-sculptures comprised of individually painted wooden clothespins; in 2006, Burberry commissioned her to make a dress in the same format. In 2012, Morris and her husband, the artist Idris Kahn, collaborated on a project using Comme des Garçon wallets.
