About the Item

Two individual, original works of art by American painter, Ross Bleckner., created in two consecutive years -2006 and 2007 for the arts organization, Visual Aids. Founded in New York City in 1988, "Visual AIDS utilizes art to fight AIDS by provoking dialogue, supporting HIV+ artists, and preserving a legacy, because AIDS is not over." Postcards from The Edge is perhaps their best-known event in New York City. Celebrated and iconic artists from around the world donate original works of art, each the size of a postcard. The cards are then placed on display and purchased by number; not artist. In this way, you could purchase an artwork by an up-and-coming artist, or an icon -like Ross Bleckner. The first time I attended a Postcards from the Edge event, I was overwhelmed by the hundreds -perhaps a thousand? gorgeous, provocative, tiny works of art. And not knowing if John Doe or somebody practically everyone had heard of. I was able to hunt down a pair of Bleckner works. It was a delightful surprise to see that although created in two different years, they are clearly related; a perfect pair. Bleckner came to prominence during the height of the AIDS epidemic in America -in the 1980s- with his stunning paintings of microscopic-scale white blood cells being destroyed by the AIDS virus. His work was abstract until you realize what, exactly, the work reflected and then they were just so impressive, in addition to being so artistically powerful. The postcards have been matted and framed. A pocket on the back contains the original identifying number and organization stamp and is signed by the artist. You can hang them or lean them on a bookshelf. Visit the "Postcards from the Edge a benefit for Visual Aids" to learn more about this fascinating and important organization. 1stdibs prevents me from giving you the link but entering the text in quotes above into a browser will take you there.

Pair Folk Art Paintings on Wood Panel, 1980s, by Moses Tolliver "MoseT"
Located in Southbury, CT
My uncle Bob was a country lawyer in rural Alabama and Moses Tolliver was one of his friends and clients. The pair of original paintings you see here were given to my uncle by Mr. Tolliver in exchange for legal services in the 1980s. Both the human figure and the snake were painted on scrap wood paneling and each has an aluminum beer pull-tab on the back for hanging. The works have been framed so the pull tab is not visible; if you prefer, simply remove the frames and both pieces will be as created. The snake painting...

Pop Art Bandage Mixed Media, Circa 1950s Unsigned
Located in Southbury, CT
This circa 1960s wall art depicts a bandage and is three-dimensional, not printed. Composed of a rubber, perforated "bandage" base and a centered square of what appears to be a cotton-linen blend "gauze" pad. The bandage is glued to paper, but with a slight ripple on one side, emphasizing the dimensionality. Obviously, it's perfect for a washroom, a medical office...
