1980s Column in Art Deco Memphis Style
About the Item
This 1980s pedestal column is like the entirety of the decade condensed and compressed into this solitary form. The Memphis slash Art Deco-ish aesthetic is brilliantly eccentric. The palate of metallic paints: platinum, gold, and copper defined the era. The design features craquelure accent areas that may be composed of flakes of previously dried paint. This one-of-a-kind work of art looks like something stolen from Liza Minnelli's dressing room.
The dimensions are: 30" tall, 13" across at the wider base, and just shy of 10" diameter across the top.
The graphic design is both etched into the column and presented in textured raised relief. As mentioned, there are certain areas of deliberate craquelure, but the paint itself is also chipping, which makes this truly spectacular piece quite fragile. I would consider having a clear, natural protective coating applied to preserve the integrity of the piece.
The column is composed of hollow wood with a wood base. I could find no artist's signature.

- Pair Folk Art Paintings on Wood Panel, 1980s, by Moses Tolliver "MoseT"Located in Southbury, CTMy uncle Bob was a country lawyer in rural Alabama and Moses Tolliver was one of his friends and clients. The pair of original paintings you see here were given to my uncle by Mr. Tolliver in exchange for legal services in the 1980s. Both the human figure and the snake were painted on scrap wood paneling and each has an aluminum beer pull-tab on the back for hanging. The works have been framed so the pull tab is not visible; if you prefer, simply remove the frames and both pieces will be as created. The snake painting...Category
